Description of Film Post-Production by bobby bose

In film making, post-production jobs refer to activities that take place after the movie has been shot. At this point, the director must shape thousands of hours of footage into a logically sequenced movie with sound effects, music, title graphics and all of the other elements moviegoers expect. Post-production crew members learn their craft at film schools or through apprenticeships. First jobs are often without pay, but offer valuable contacts and work experience.

 Film Editor
It’s the editor’s job to help the director make sense of the thousands of hours of footage shot on location. Scenes are almost always shot out of sequence, so the story must be edited to fit the director’s idea of chronology. Decisions must be made as to which of each scene’s multiple takes and camera angles will be used, and what must be scrapped. The editor completes a rough cut, which is basically the film’s first draft edit, but much more work will be done. In the past, film was physically cut and spliced, which is how actors and scenes could end up “on the cutting room floor.” But today most editors digitize the footage and use movie editing software such as Avid and Final Cut Pro.

Sound Editors
Sound editors are responsible for all audio that must be added to a film. The music editor selects the music and edits it into the footage. This can also mean adding temporary music when the film is still in post-production. The automatic dialogue replacement (ADR) recordist works with the film’s actors to replace unusable dialogue. No matter how sensitive or well-placed the microphones are during shooting, some dialogue ends up garbled; or the scene is shot from such a distance that microphones prove useless. In other cases, “looping” is used to replace certain words with milder dialogue when edited for television. The foley artist works with the sound effects editor to create effects as mundane as the slamming of doors or as inventive as the snarl of an alien. All sound editors work under the direction of the supervising sound editor.
Music Composer
One of the final steps in production is the scoring of the film. The composer receives a rough cut and writes original music that fits the plot, each scene’s mood and the director’s intentions. John Williams’ score for the Star Wars saga is a prime example of a music composer adding an important dimension to film production.

Post-Production Supervisor
The post-production supervisor acts as a liaison between the director and the various post-production crews. In some cases, the post-production supervisor might also help the director select staff. This job also involves being the primary contact with the film lab and other vendors during the later stages of film production.

Film Editing: 5 Steps to Becoming a Film Editor

Do you love movies and videos of all types? Are you highly organized and meticulous? Are you willing to help others realize their creative visions? If so, then a job as a film editor might be right for you. For more information about becoming one read here.

What Is a Film Editor?

A film editor is a creative specialist who assembles raw footage into a finished sequence of moving images that tell a story, present a viewpoint or demonstrate an activity. The editing process typically entails organizing footage into a rough cut, then refining it by expanding, reducing, removing or rearranging the order of scenes. Editors often make major decisions about content in collaboration with a production’s director, but otherwise have a lot of latitude in the shots, angles and lines of dialogue they choose to include. On larger productions they may also collaborate with sound editors and music editors on the composition of the soundtrack. Although the career used to entail cutting and splicing actual film stock, today the vast majority of film editing is accomplished digitally on computers.

Step 1: Earn a High School Diploma

You will need a high school diploma or GED to enroll in a college or university that teaches film editing. While in high school, you might also take advantage of any relevant courses or clubs your school has to offer. For example, many high schools have production programs that expose you to the basics of shooting and editing videos. Some schools also have audio visual clubs that can familiarize you with video equipment. You might also take computer science courses that include content in motion graphics and animation.

Step 2: Earn a Degree or Certificate

Bachelor’s degree programs in film provide comprehensive training in all aspects of film making, such as pre-production and planning, scriptwriting, cinematography, lighting, set design, sound, post-production and distribution. If a program allows for flexibility in its curriculum, you should try to weigh it in favor of editing and post-production courses. Montage, linear sequences, shot relation, visual effects processing and editing software programs are among the topics editing courses are likely to cover.

You might not have to complete a bachelor’s degree in order to obtain a job as an editor. Technical schools, private trade schools and community colleges often offer associate’s degree, diploma and certificate programs specifically related to video editing skills. Such programs often cover the foundational skills of editing and can prepare you for an internship or entry-level position in the field.

Step 3: Participate in an Internship

An internship provides real-world work experience and contacts that can help you obtain a job as an editor. Having a network of contacts is especially important in the film industry. You may be able to obtain an internship through your school or through non-profit organizations, studios and industry trade groups. The projects you work on could include Internet videos, music videos, TV shows, features or documentaries.

Step 4: Obtain a Job

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the motion picture and video production industry employ the vast majority of film editors (http://www.bls.gov). Editing work can range from feature films to low-budget projects and Internet media. About 19,930 people worked as film and video editors in 2010. The BLS projects employment will reach 28,600 by 2018. However, you should be prepared for intensive competition as job candidates outnumber available positions in the editing field. Keeping your knowledge of editing technology up-to-date will give you the best prospects. The median salary of film and video editors was $50,930 as of May 2010.

BOBBY BOSE – The owner of NEI India. He is Film Editor with 15 yrs of Experience in Films and Television To read more about bobby bose film editor & nei india film & tv editing institute kindly visit http://www.neiindia.com

Step 5: Advance Your Career

In the film industry a typical career path takes you from apprentice editor to assistant editor to full editor. The most skilled editors sometimes become directors or transition into production. Consider joining a union to improve your chances of advancement. In a union you could move from apprentice to assistant in three years or less and from apprentice to editor in five years. Most film editors who join a union become members of the Motion Picture and Videotape Editors Guild of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees.
